Highgate School is situated in Highgate, an established eastern suburb of the city of Adelaide, South Australia. It comprises a Reception to Year 7 School on the one site. Combining traditional values with a modern progressive curriculum, Highgate School enjoys strong community support. Set in a safe and pleasant environment away from main roads, the School has easy access to the city’s central business district just ten minutes drive away.

School Facilities and Resources

The facilities at Highgate School include modern air-conditioned classrooms each fully equipped with computers and electronic interactive whiteboards. Pleasant landscaped gardens and paved areas, modern playground equipment and a range of playing fields provide an enjoyable environment for the students to work and play.

Some of our buildings are heritage listed and have been carefully maintained to preserve their integrity and still provide convenient workplaces. There are two computer suites with up to date Microsoft computers and two sets of laptops for whole class use with wireless connectivity across the school. The whole school is wired for access to the Internet and Servers. Other technologies include video and still cameras, robotics facilities and a digital weather station.

A brand new well-equipped Resource Centre/Library, a Performing Arts centre (for music and drama), 3 new classrooms and a full sized Gymnasium with kitchen facilities have recently been completed. The Art Room is equipped with a kiln and the recently refurbished Canteen offers a wide range of healthy lunches and snacks prepared on site.

Curriculum

Public schools are in the transition period from the SACSAF (South Australian Curriculum Standards & Accountability Framework) to the Australian Curriculum. Teachers are required to plan, evaluate and report to parents using a mix of SACSA and the Australian Curriculum. In 2013 the Australian Curriculum areas of Science, Mathematics, English and History are to be reported on. SACSA will continue to provide the other parts of the curriculum. The eight areas of learning through SACSA are: English, Mathematics, Technology, Health & Physical Education, Science, Society & Environment, The Arts and Languages (other than English). ESL support is provided for students who speak a language other than English with their parents or grandparents. It is given to students in Reading and Responding, Oral Interaction and Writing. Greek as a First Language, Maintenance and Development program is offered to those students who identify with the Greek culture. Chinese is taught to all children by a specialist language teacher.
